I have not posted in a really long time, so I thought I'd make this short entry. I recently got a request from a friend for a little dragon family. I love getting requests since it gives me an excuse to fold things while I should be doing other things.<br />
<br />
I enjoyed this idea so much that the Happy Little Dragon is slowly developing into a character with a back story in my head. We'll see where that goes, but for now, as requested, here is the Happy Little Dragon with his two moms!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SwN7-x2_c3o/VG_3E94HSDI/AAAAAAAAB7M/hlK3KIFYcQI/s1600/2014-11-21%2B15.17.53.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SwN7-x2_c3o/VG_3E94HSDI/AAAAAAAAB7M/hlK3KIFYcQI/s1600/2014-11-21%2B15.17.53.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The two adult dragons are designed by Edwin Corrie. There is no tutorial for this particular dragon that I could find, but here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOktgBAW9z0">tutorial</a> for another dragon by the same designer. The only difference between the two is the head. If you need help making the head, you can refer to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rCwwbqwTS4">this</a>.<br />
<br />
As for the little star in the middle, he was based on a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF1MRVQQpzs">design by Gilad Aharoni</a>.<br />
<br />

I've recently finished reading the first installment in the <i>A Song of Ice and Fire</i> series, and since then I have been trying to avoid spoilers like the plague, what with the show now in its fourth season and all. I have not had the time to get into a good fantasy series in a long time, so I thought I'd do a House Sigil series as I get into the second book, <i>A Clash of Kings</i>.<br />
<br />
I start with House Stark because they are the coolest/least dysfunctional, and House Targaryen because dragons.<br />

Just a quick note to say Happy Mother's Day to all the beautiful mothers I know. Mother's Day is celebrated on March 21st in Lebanon, the first day of spring, so it was a bit weird for me this morning seeing all the Mother's Day posts online. But Happy Mother's Day to you wherever you live!<br />

I am in the middle of writing final papers, but Paper Moon has never let an occasion to fold origami pass by, especially not an essential holiday like May the Fourth! I thought it was high time I brought back Fumiaki Kawahata's Yoda!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I still use <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5B71d1OR_M">Jo Nakashima's excellent tutorial</a> as my reference.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here are Light Yoda and Dark Yoda watching over my shoulder as I work and giving me conflicting advice.</div>

<br />
Dark Yoda has a point. There's so much origami to fold, and so little time without wasting it working.<br />
<br />
While avoiding my real-life projects (kids, don't take my example), I discovered <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iMtd2m0y5A">Jeremy Shafer's awesome X-Wing Fighter</a>. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok, I had better get back to some real work now. <span style="font-size: large;">May the Fourth Be With You!</span></div>

People have different ways of self-expression. Some people express themselves through poetry, dance, music, theater. I have, strangely enough, found a great outlet in folding paper.<br />
<br />
This semester, I am taking a course in comparative literature titled "Literature of the Self". We were recently given an assignment to produce an autobiographical work. I wanted to express a particular sentiment, and I thought, What better way to put my thoughts to paper (I couldn't help myself) than by making a few expressive paper sculptures. I am not a poet or a dancer, but my medium can be just as effective in conveying some messages.<br />
<br />
This blog is by no means turning into an artsy experimental statement. I do not want to scare my readers away with this pedantic blurb (I'm just trying to survive grad school), but I thought I can probably be forgiven one idiosyncratic post.<br />
<br />
I have been thinking for a while now of how many mixed signals we receive in our day-to-day existence. People around us who are not forthcoming and honest, always trying to be politically correct and polite when they actually just want to shout at you, people who can't make up their minds about what they want. I don't know about you, but sometimes it makes me sick. Sometimes you can't even tell if a smile is just a smile, or an attempt to hide some ill-feeling. There's nothing worse than hypocrisy, and I have been told that I do not pick up on the mixed signals people sometimes send off. I am apparently very bad at decoding friendliness and understanding what people are really feeling when they are trying very hard to hide it. Silly me. Why can't people just say what they mean? I could probably do very well living in a cave somewhere away from people. But there wouldn't be any paper, and I would soon get bored.<br />
<br />
My frustration with these things found an outlet in a particular form of origami. <a href="http://www.britishorigami.info/academic/lister/kusudamas.php">Kusudama</a> is an ancient practice, the history of which I will let you read about on your own. It is a modular form, each model requiring several pieces, or modules, that fit together in perfect geometrical harmony to create a whole. The juxtaposition of the various pieces here illustrates perfectly whatever I was blabbing about earlier. People can be layered, just like the models I am about to show you; they can be multifaceted, and show different faces at different times. They are sometimes beautiful and soft, and sometimes very ugly and sharp. And if my little experiment here has failed in all other regards, the hours of work that went into the making these models will have at least served as a distraction from my troubles and woes.<br />
<br />
Without further ado, and to end this endless somber blurb (which you can just forget about in a minute), I will leave you to enjoy these beautiful models to which I do not do justice.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The amount of brochures and flyers I have received since coming to this country hurts my heart. It seems to me that we can do without all of the paper we waste every day. It pains me to throw a portion of it away, because let's face it, I'd drown in it if I didn't. And recycling is not always available.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or is it? It is in the very spirit of origami to reuse paper when you are done with it. In ancient Japan, paper was not as cheap as it is today, so people made pretty things out of used paper so as not to waste it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So this Earth Day, try to use less paper, and instead of your expensive patterned origami paper, why not try reusing some old flyers you have lying around? All those extra sheets and leaflets you've accumulated would be perfect for making a kusudama or other modular origami that requires several pieces of paper. Check out my<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2013/04/earth-day-2013.html"> Earth Day kusudama</a> from last year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can also use it to make your 1000 paper cranes. Honestly, who has the money to buy special paper for a project like that? Or simply try these nice Earth Day-appropriate models!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I realize this is very late in the day, so I will keep it short and sweet. Enjoy with me these little easter-inspired models!<br />
<br />
This basket is not strictly origami as it involves some *cough*cutting*cough*, but it is a lot of fun to construct. Here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJjlf2nqrRA">tutorial</a> on how to make it. For the handle, I twisted some thin strips of paper then braided them together instead of the simple handle shown in the video.<br />

I am not Christian myself, and I don't care what religion you are. We've all painted eggs and stuffed ourselves with chocolate on this day as children. So Happy Easter to you!</div>

Happy April 1st everyone!<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In France, when someone plays a prank on you, they triumphantly declare "poisson d'avril!", which means "April Fish". I am sure there is a reason for this, but as a kid, we always just went with it. If you grew up a Frenchie, you'll remember spending the whole day cutting out little paper fish to stick on your friends' backs when they weren't looking. Once again, I never questioned these traditions as a child. Just enjoy this meta-fish and don't judge.<br />
<br />
For all of you non-Frenchies, here are some other things.<br />
<br />
<br />
So I don't have students to torment this year (how I miss those days). I thought I'd regale all of you with some paper tricks instead. These neat little models are not what they appear. I have made GIFs to prove it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here's an old favorite: the amazing modular transforming ninja star. If you would like to make this model, check out <a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2013/01/easy-origami-for-easily-bored-ninja-star.html">my tutorial</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
And what's this? A box? Nop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Are you amazed yet?<br />
<br />
How about thise? Here's a cool folding exercise: the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSbCl54QaM0">Magical Transforming Octahedron</a> by Jeremy Shafer.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Ok, so I ain't fooling you. You're too smart. But the mechanics behind these models are very interesting, and not because I'm writing this at 5am.<br />
<br />
<br />
Fine, I'm sorry. You wanted neat pranks to play on your friends, didn't you? And I blew it. Truth is, paper is meant to make people happy. Unless you don't know how to hold it and get paper cuts. I guess this whole post was some kind of bad April Fools' joke. But before you go, take a look at this neat trick inspired by origami (this one's legit).<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leave me a comment if you can figure out how he does it. And good luck finding ways to make other people miserable!</div>

<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ImlRO8pjh8M/Uv14pPH16fI/AAAAAAAABks/UNyFHZPwLPM/s1600/2014-02-13+17.23.47''.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ImlRO8pjh8M/Uv14pPH16fI/AAAAAAAABks/UNyFHZPwLPM/s1600/2014-02-13+17.23.47''.jpg" height="272" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Once there was a guy called Saint Valentine who died. The end. Cool story, huh?<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What's that? <b><i>"Not really,"</i></b> you say? Then why do people, over sixteen centuries later, feel obliged to spend obscene amounts of money every year on February 14th to prove that they love someone?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Who's the culprit, you ask? As usual, we have <i><b>Chaucer</b> </i>to blame. Or the guy who misinterpreted him. The author of <i>The Canterbury Tales</i> was the first to associate the Feast of Saint Valentine with love and romantic activity. Critics believe that the Feast of Saint Valentine that Chaucer was referring to <b><i>actually falls on May 3rd. </i></b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You heard me. You can read about it in this <a href="http://spotlight.ucla.edu/faculty/henry-kelly_valentine/">article by Meg Sullivan</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nevertheless, since February 14th has come to be celebrated as the Day of Love in some countries, and since I have avoided making a Valentine's Day post in the past, it might be time for Paper Moon to show some love. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
(Note: You will not see any hearts on this blog. Except <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BiX1-Rj_bII/UJcIcT5MsJI/AAAAAAAAAO0/BUoKDqcTDAQ/s320/bathearts.jpg">this one</a>. It was Halloween, and the thing was cute.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
******</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
SO, what are you going to give your sweetheart tomorrow?</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Apparently, nothing says I love you like a nice single red rose. Here is a pretty paper alternative to the kind that dies. This model was designed by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSesWQ-51ZM">Jo Nakashima</a>. If you are a frequent reader of this blog, you know I have voiced some<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/11/paper-flowers.html"> strong opinions about the giving of flowers as gifts</a>. Don't get me wrong, I think flowers are great. When they're outside. With their roots still attached. So for alternative options, please check the previous post.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And did you get her a gift? Do you want to make him think you're super creative? Why not put your trinkets in a nice little origami box? I have dug around and found some nice, non-gushy options for the less "romantic" among us. You're welcome.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is also the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVohsCv8fH4">Love Swan Box</a> by Tadashi Mori. I am quite partial to this one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QHfREURESFo/Uv1tsb6BB-I/AAAAAAAABkY/OH4k5E5BMYc/s1600/2014-02-13+17.20.19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QHfREURESFo/Uv1tsb6BB-I/AAAAAAAABkY/OH4k5E5BMYc/s1600/2014-02-13+17.20.19.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-39R1rSMqHT8/Uv1tp4Q3bXI/AAAAAAAABkM/lHS68tTUnTw/s1600/2014-02-13+17.19.09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-39R1rSMqHT8/Uv1tp4Q3bXI/AAAAAAAABkM/lHS68tTUnTw/s1600/2014-02-13+17.19.09.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And even though I am clearly not into all the sickly, sugary cr... criminal injustice that is pink hearts and creepy red plush dolls we must endure year after year, here is a beautiful and elaborate model, also by Tadashi Mori. The Versailles Box is made up of three sections. Find out how to make the flower part <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWR7aceWh1A">here</a>, and the leaf part <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h65hWPBe0SA">here</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These models can be given to anyone you love on this, the Day of Love. If you're not romantically involved, it doesn't mean there's no one out there who loves you. I mean, there has to be someone, right? Just spend tomorrow with someone you love if you can. Do it for all of us who are missing our loved ones but can't be with them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will end this tribute to poor Saint Valentine, the martyr, who I am sure died very painfully at the hands of the Romans, with these parting words of wisdom:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span id="docs-internal-guid-390520d8-2e13-2de0-ce7e-306e45cde030"><span style="font-family: Calligraffitti; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-size: large;">Remember, chocolate is always the best gift.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had never understood what a cool little holiday Groundhog Day was before I came to the US. In honor of the colorful folklore behind it, I made this little guy. The resources I found were not very useful, so I decided to make my own tutorial. It's a quick and easy model, and I haven't made a video in a while. Enjoy!<br />

<br />
Now that we've celebrate, rested, and adjusted our brains to the new year (well, sort of. I just dated a check "January 2013"), it's time to get back to work. I don't believe in New Year's resolutions, because if you were going to do it, it would not require all the theatrics and fanfare, would it? But I have concocted some new origami projects for 2014. To kick it off, I have summoned forth the twelve animals of the zodiac in a glorious procession to tell us the story of the Chinese Zodiac.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">One day, God, Buddha, or the Wizard, whichever you prefer, invited the animals to a banquet. During the feast, they would decide which twelve animals would become the signs of the zodiac.</span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Rat and the Cat were very excited. They decided they would go early to secure their places. The Cat made the Rat promise to wake him in time for the banquet. </span>(If you are not bothered by the fact that the animals can talk but find it odd that the rat is bigger than the cat, then...too bad.)<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cat Nap by Philip Shulz</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-size: large;">But the next day, in a fit of squeaky excitement, the Rat forgot his promise and rushed off to the banquet, leaving the Cat asleep. By the time he woke up, it was already too late, for twelve animals had arrived before him, and the Cat was excluded from the zodiac.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">So there were the twelve animals for the twelve zodiac signs, and the lineup was complete. Buddha announced to the animals that there would be a race across the river to determine the order of the twelve signs. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">When the signal was given, the animals all rushed to the river. Each wanted to be the first to make it across, probably not realizing that after a few millenia it really wouldn't matter whose year came first in the cycle. </span><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Right before they set out, the Rat jumped up onto the back of the Cow (or Ox if you prefer) unnoticed by anyone. That's right, I said unnoticed.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">They all ran and jumped into the river and swam as fast as they could. As the race was nearing its end, the Cow was ahead of all of them and was almost at the finish. Even though there was like, a flying dragon in the race. But whatever. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The little son of a mother had done it again! And this time, he had won the race!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">And so it was that the Rat came in first, and the order of the zodiac signs was decided:</span><br />

In honor of the Year of the Horse, which happens to be my year, and which to my dismay, I've already seen three times in my life (that must mean I'm getting old, right?), I thought I'd experiment with a couple of models. This next one was fun, and slightly more complex than the previous one, but if you are going to attempt this model, my advice is: use big paper. No, really, the biggest you can get. Just to illustrate how small this model comes out, the horse in the photograph below is standing in front of your standard d20 and d10 dice. Yes, it's that small. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Technical note: This model starts with an equilateral triangle rather than a square. The paper I used was the standard 15cm x 15cm which I cut into a triangle. I had to skip a few minor steps because at some point it got too small to fold.</div>

After a very long leave of absence, I am happy to bring back Paper Moon! This time from the deep south of the US of A, in Athens, GA. It's been a very busy few months, getting acquainted with the town and my new university.<br />

Georgia is very big on American football, something I still don't quite have a handle on. I am not a big sports person, as readers of this blog may already know. I'd much rather stay home and play with paper. Still, being here has certainly been inspiring. We here at Georgia wear our colors proudly, but instead of painting my face red and black (our colors) and standing under the hot southern sun for four hours, sweating and waiting for someone to kick the illusive oblong ball, this is my tribute to my new alma mater.</div>

I love how the seasons change here. I don't believe I've had a real autumn before. Trees in Lebanon usually keep their leaves most of the year, so seeing the streets lined with yellow and orange and red was quite delightful. Here are a couple of design ideas for your leafy needs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And now, 'tis finally the season. I thought what better time to come back than Christmastime? (I don't really know why this seemed appropriate, but I've got a case of the holiday spirit again.) I didn't go all out like <a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/12/happy-holidays.html">last year</a>, but I did make some nice origami ornaments. If you're not into trees, just make them and hang them somewhere anyway. Here are some favorites for this year. <br />

The good thing about Lebanon, as I always say, is its diversity. We have so many sects and confessions that sometimes it's hard to keep track, but whenever one of them celebrates a holy day or has some kind of commemoration, everyone gets a holiday. If you miss Western Easter like I did this year, then you can still have your chocolate eggs on <b><span style="font-size: large;">Eastern Easter</span></b>. So Happy Easter to whoever celebrated today!<br />

This last one may look simple, but you'll be surprised to know that it was the most complex model in this whole post.<br />
<br />
<br />
On another note, it also happens to be May 5th, so if you missed May the Fourth (as I did), then there is always the <b><span style="font-size: large;">Revenge of the Fifth</span></b>! What does Star Wars Day have to do with Easter? Nothing. But that's what happens when I get behind on current events.<br />
<br />
I made this little guy last year.<br />

I like doing "<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/11/fan-origami.html">Fan Origami</a>" so much, or as I will henceforth call it, Fanigami (because it's late and I've been listening to an audio book of the <i>Iliad </i>all day), that I couldn't let Star Wars Day pass by without posting a few clumsy models that have been on my list for a while. Happy Labor Day everyone!<br />
<br />
I hope everyone had a good well-deserved day off. For workaholics like me, work is what you like to do to "relax", even at home. There is nothing like feeling productive after a quiet day at home with nothing but you, your books, and your laptop.<br />
<br />
Home is my office, and the office is my home.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CLxY5OYoBJg/UYFXSFHHByI/AAAAAAAABMM/DLA_ElIknOs/s1600/2013-05-01+19.47.14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CLxY5OYoBJg/UYFXSFHHByI/AAAAAAAABMM/DLA_ElIknOs/s400/2013-05-01+19.47.14.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have done everything short of sleeping in that place. But I have the feeling that a day will come when I have to take a nap right there in my chair. I leave all of my stuff at the office: my Tupperware, my blanket when it's cold, and my books, which litter the desk.</div>

On the whole, work is fun and never fails to be interesting, and the office has been a second home to me for nearly five years now. My obsessive folding is not only tolerated there; it is encouraged. For instance, we sometimes use origami demonstrations in our English classes to teach students process analysis. And origami often provides a nice touch to our projects.</div>

I'm one of those freaks who are terrified of surprise days off and holidays for fear of not getting everything done. I do not bemoan the end of the weekend, but rather start planning the week to come. I might be exaggerating a little. Of course, it can get very tiring sometimes, and the prospect of sleeping in on days off is always welcome, but I know people who absolutely hate their jobs. So at the end of the day, I suppose I should count myself blessed.</div>

<span style="text-align: left;">We are nearing the end of April, and it's still cold and rainy here in Lebanon. Some people in Canada are still snowed in, and winter just does not seem to want to leave. It makes me think, today especially, how bad we must have been to our Earth to make it so confused. </span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div>
<br />
It is no tragedy when thousands of people die in an earthquake, hurricane or flood; it's just nature fighting back. The real tragedy is how we turn a deaf ear to her desperate cries for help. Winter in the middle of spring, and summers which stretch out well into autumn should be a sign that something is terribly wrong. Or is it just me?</div>

To put my conscience at ease, I decided to make today's origami out of reused paper.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9JAb_sXtM5Q/UXVDqI3nNqI/AAAAAAAABL8/f3hcySorv5o/s1600/2013-04-22+16.26.27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9JAb_sXtM5Q/UXVDqI3nNqI/AAAAAAAABL8/f3hcySorv5o/s400/2013-04-22+16.26.27.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This frog looks nothing like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_fIlEsrxI8">the original design</a>.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
There is always used paper lying around, so why not make something out of it? That is after all the idea behind origami, and this blog for that matter.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bKfSrVR7y3Q/UXVC9tweNMI/AAAAAAAABLc/DihwYZIl96E/s1600/2013-04-22+14.41.19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bKfSrVR7y3Q/UXVC9tweNMI/AAAAAAAABLc/DihwYZIl96E/s400/2013-04-22+14.41.19.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I made my very first kusudama following <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Yp3w2Dy3C8">this tutorial</a>. Kusudama often require a lot of paper. This model for instance uses 30 units (no wonder I'd never had the courage to make one before), so try putting all that paper you were going to toss out to good use and make something decorative and neat (those of you who have read this blog before know that when I say neat, I mean "cool", "cute", "interesting", not the other thing, which my models very seldom are.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EY_p96d0l6E/UXVDhTbmVcI/AAAAAAAABLw/X-xDYodVBXU/s1600/2013-04-22+14.41.43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EY_p96d0l6E/UXVDhTbmVcI/AAAAAAAABLw/X-xDYodVBXU/s320/2013-04-22+14.41.43.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3yaUdTH0IKg/UXVDhXDllnI/AAAAAAAABL0/Ekuq46DEbpQ/s1600/2013-04-22+14.42.04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3yaUdTH0IKg/UXVDhXDllnI/AAAAAAAABL0/Ekuq46DEbpQ/s320/2013-04-22+14.42.04.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
And if you don't have anyone to impress, or if you've already snazzed-up your living quarters enough (seriously, are your parents/roommates starting to complain?) you can make something useful out of scraps of paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HJWfYrH7MLo/UXVDA1oQD9I/AAAAAAAABLk/WvCsbwDJKzo/s1600/2013-04-22+14.42.47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HJWfYrH7MLo/UXVDA1oQD9I/AAAAAAAABLk/WvCsbwDJKzo/s320/2013-04-22+14.42.47.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We use these little boxes around the office sometimes. Pages from magazines and flyers printed on glossy paper work best and are often colorful. For instructions on how to make this origami box, visit <a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/11/how-to-make-origami-box.html">this older blog post</a>.</div>

As a child, I wanted to be an environmentalist/conservationist/zoologist. I later realized that it was a lost cause, and that Mother Nature was beyond help. Maybe if I had gone through with my dream, the Earth would have been saved by now. The thought will forever haunt me!<br />

I have recently counted 500 cranes! To mark the completion of the first half of my journey to folding 1000 paper cranes, I thought another crane post was in order.<br />

<br />
Over time, I have folded some very strange cranes. I folded them out of everything and anything I could get my hands on, even chocolate wrappers. There have been some strange mutations indeed on Paper Moon in the past. Let us revisit some favorite crane posts: "<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/11/mutant-cranes.html">Mutant Cranes</a>" and "<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/12/cranes-again.html" target="_blank">Cranes Again</a>".<br />

Cranes have been my favorite things to fold since I started doing origami, and I've tried my hand at some variations before (see "<a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2012/10/box-o-cranes.html">Box O' Cranes</a>").<br />
<br />
In honor of the occasion, I made a few (many -- I actually spent way too much time on this) neat crane variations.<br />
<br />
Let us start with some traditional variations.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vXPImNDFbb0/UU3lOncNM8I/AAAAAAAABI0/m3E79-xyBUE/s1600/2013-03-11+17.18.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vXPImNDFbb0/UU3lOncNM8I/AAAAAAAABI0/m3E79-xyBUE/s400/2013-03-11+17.18.13.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wavy-Winged Crane</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Congratulations Crane</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w_AAqg9FeM0/UU3mDAXvUdI/AAAAAAAABJM/wquaP5K6IWg/s1600/2013-03-11+17.28.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w_AAqg9FeM0/UU3mDAXvUdI/AAAAAAAABJM/wquaP5K6IWg/s1600/2013-03-11+17.28.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w_AAqg9FeM0/UU3mDAXvUdI/AAAAAAAABJM/wquaP5K6IWg/s1600/2013-03-11+17.28.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w_AAqg9FeM0/UU3mDAXvUdI/AAAAAAAABJM/wquaP5K6IWg/s200/2013-03-11+17.28.10.jpg" width="150" /></a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This beautiful crane variation by Eric Joisel has to be one of my favorites. Watch the master himself at work in this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjcD6NuvloI">video</a>. Mine certainly doesn't do it justice.<br />

<br />
These last two are very different and in no way resemble a traditional crane. They will probably not be included in my crane count. I did not even make clean versions of them, just kept the rough kraft paper drafts. I thought they were interesting models though, despite how messy they look.<br />

Lebanon celebrates Mother's Day today. So if you are a mom, wherever you are, you are a remarkable being.<br />
<br />
I was one of those kids who were fortunate to have had a supermom growing up. If you're like me, and if your mom was your comfort and solace, your teacher and friend, then don't forget to tell her so today. Remember that during those long hours in the delivery room, she was busy pushing your ungrateful fat head out of herself so that for many years to come she could cook for you, clean you, drive you around and spend every waking moment making you happy. So when she hugs you, don't pull away too soon.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you're thinking of giving your mom a home-made card this year, why not go the extra mile! I've been into pop-up art lately (see this <a href="http://papersunandmoon.blogspot.com/2013/03/happy-teachers-day-womens-day.html" target="_blank">previous post</a>), and I have received requests for more pop-up (actually, it was like, one request...recommendation...suggestion? ok, it was a comment made in passing.)<br />
<br />
These are not exactly Mother's Day themed, but really, why wouldn't your mom want aliens and butterflies?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So it came out better than I expected, although the nice engineering is somewhat overshadowed by my childish artwork.</td></tr>

I read somewhere that the color blue was initially associated with St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. However, green somehow came to replace it. I'm not complaining; green is a great color, and what better color for this Feast celebrated in the Emerald Isle? Plus, it gave me an excuse to make all this green origami.<br />

<br />
First some clovers for good luck. For tutorials, check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/happypuppytruffles" target="_blank">happypuppytruffles</a>' YouTube channel.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And of course, a top hat complete with Shamrock. Here are some helpful guidelines: page <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/origami-top-hat-15.jpg" target="_blank">1</a> - <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/origami-top-hat-16.jpg" target="_blank">2</a>, but I pretty much improvised it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And finally, here are some rosettes I thought could serve as nice decorations or traditional St. Patrick's Day badges. This is really more kirigami than origami, but fun nevertheless.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Well, the day is almost over and I have not seen a leprechaun yet. There are also rarely any rainbows in the city what with pollution and all. I gotta say though, I'm running out of origami paper, and that pot of gold would have come in handy.<br />

While I am working on my next project, which keeps growing the longer I spend in front of my computer screen researching models to fold, I thought I would post this neat little logo I made for Paper Moon. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm really happy with how it came out. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The letters are a mix of techniques I sort of improvised which I might turn into tutorials sometime. I'm not a big fan of the traditional two-dimensional letters; I much prefer these three-dimensional ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And of course, I couldn't help sprucing it up a bit with photo editor. It appears more professional and makes it look like I spent more time on it than I actually did.</div>

Well, I have not posted in ages. It only seems fit that I should post about two events at once today!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
First, <b><span style="color: #b45f06;">Happy Teacher's Day</span></b> to all the wonderful teachers I know. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xTB_bCNHbcs/UTomDh-PuxI/AAAAAAAABDI/A9lD_nGzOSI/s1600/20130308_163543''.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xTB_bCNHbcs/UTomDh-PuxI/AAAAAAAABDI/A9lD_nGzOSI/s1600/20130308_163543''.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I think Teacher's Day is celebrated on the 9th in Lebanon, but today was an official day off to celebrate our wonderful teachers, so this is appropriate. Today I'm not just thinking of my school and university teachers, but anyone who may have taught me something or helped me become a better person, whether they meant to or not. I know I would not be who I am today if it wasn't for all the people I've met, good and bad.<br />

<br />
This thing I made is not strictly origami. I've recently become fascinated by pop-up art after getting my hands on this beautiful book by Benjamin Lacombe called<i> <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8691500-il-tait-une-fois" target="_blank">Il était une fois</a></i>. It has made me want to dabble in pop-up. Hence, this card I made for my wonderful supervisor.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AnbNijOSVeo/UToiv265OSI/AAAAAAAABCA/hjzGOcnp3tM/s1600/581698_10151532131587456_588250248_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AnbNijOSVeo/UToiv265OSI/AAAAAAAABCA/hjzGOcnp3tM/s400/581698_10151532131587456_588250248_n.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It's part origami, part glue and inky fingers. It's a little bit messy, but it was only my second try, so I'm not too upset.<br />

<br />
Unfortunately, I know a truck-full of disappointing ladies I try to keep out of my life, but I'm infinitely grateful for the handful of beautiful women I know who I can look up to and trust. You know who you are.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">

It's really rewarding when you are teaching and you can tell that your students have learned something from you. My kids are really getting the hang of some of the folds. They don't even need to be reminded of how to make their preliminary folds anymore, and simply proceed to making them on their own.<br />
<br />
This lesson, I wanted to try out some slightly more complex models (as in, with more steps; I am still going for the pretty simple) and I chose some fun ones with a twist. The last two, however, were the kids' own choices. They provided some of the paper and the book we used. I was pleased to see that they prepared the material in anticipation for the lesson. That's how I know I must be doing something right.<br />
<br />
<br />
We started with these balloon bunnies. The kids loved the part where we had to blow them up.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And then we made a bunch of creepy blinking eyes.<br />

One of the kids chose these sparrows for our next projects. I think they are sparrows; the book said "moineau". It was in French, and very confusing. The kids laughed at me when I read the instructions in reverse. We had to start over a couple of times. It was embarrassing, especially considering the simplicity of the model.<br />

By this time, they were getting pretty tired and sleepy, but when has a kid ever consented to stopping? They always want more. We quickly made these awkward but cute penguins before saying good night.<br />

I don't know what it is about dress-up that is so fascinating to kids, but I believe that a kid has not been born who did not play dress-up at some point or other. I supposed when you are very young, it is not that you don't know who you are yet, but rather that you are no body, and at the same time you are every body. It's that incredible feeling that you could be anything you want just by donning the habit. It's very different when we're adults. Not only do we lose that strange but wonderfully tolerant imagination that kids have, but there is always some expectation for us to be one thing or another.<br />
<br />
But that's enough philosophizing for one day I think.<br />
<br />
When I was little, I always liked to cut up little pieces of my old clothes and make miniature clothes for my dolls. Turns out this is much easier. If only I could make my own clothes out of paper to avoid going shopping. I hate shopping.<br />

The power went out for three hours today, as it does every day here in Beirut. However, I do not have back-up power on Sundays. So while I was sitting around waiting for the electricity to come back on (I'd like to take this opportunity to wish our beloved minister of power good luck in the upcoming elections), I thought I'd fold myself a little paper Android buddy.<br />
